Inspired by Grant Muller's podcast episode What is success for you, two businessmen congratulating each other on shared success

Success is a tempting goal. We all want it, but success means different things to different people, and how we get there is just as unique. In this blog, we explore the extraordinary life of Grant Muller, whose story isn't just about success; it's also about facing obstacles and finding the strength to overcome them. His journey and resulting wisdom come together in his book, Top of Heart, a deeply personal and reflective story about his climb to success, subsequent fall into addiction, and his ultimate recovery and discovery of the meaning of true success that now gives his life meaning. There are lessons here for all of us.

From Horses to the Corporate World, and the Importance of Authenticity

Grant Muller was born in South Africa and moved to the U.S. as a child in 1979. After leaving high school, he was determined to achieve significance in his life. He had a passion for horses, which he turned into a successful business as an equestrian.

Later, Grant transitioned to the corporate world, where he became wildly successful. But his experiences there revealed a key lesson – the significance of maintaining authenticity in one's work. The more he moved away from his true self, the more he realized he was losing his sense of purpose.

Real-Life Experience and Managing Wealth—The Spiral into Addiction

Venturing into Silicon Valley and gaining considerable fortune isn't without its challenges. In the prime of his corporate career, Muller was living a life that, on the surface, seemed like a dream. But beneath that veneer was a struggle that led to addiction, nearly ending his life—an important reminder that success in the external world doesn't always relate to personal fulfillment or happiness.

Recovery and the Power of Seeking Help and the Joys of Work and Helping Others

Grant's journey takes us through his recovery from addiction. His experiences demonstrate the significance of accepting support from others while helping oneself.

Success isn't solely measured by financial gains; it's about finding joy in your work. Grant's story takes an intriguing twist when he discovers fulfillment in helping others. He found immense satisfaction in helping his teams serve consumers at a higher level, and it was in this role that he fell in love with what he now identifies as coaching.
Coaching and being a team leader turned out to be Grant's true calling, showing that success often lies where your heart takes you.

His ability to coach team members into leadership positions was pivotal in his role. This revelation tied together his diverse prior experiences—consumer service and coaching. Coaching transcends a mere job; it becomes a calling, serving as a reminder that true happiness is discovered in the work you're passionate about.

“What I realize now is that what I love so much is coaching. I coached my team members into those leadership positions. And so, when I look back, I realize that the whole thing that ties it all together at one level or another is consumer service and coaching. So, it's interesting when you look back on your life to see the themes that emerge that you could never connect the dots going forward.”
